The cover photograph for this website is a man many Robertstown people will know. Christopher Joseph Coyne also known as Bert. The following is an excerpt from my publication from the census of 1901 which relates to Bert and his family.
Archbold, Coyne, Domican & O’Leary: Number 25, a 2nd class public house dwelling had six rooms with four windows in the front of the building. The walls were constructed of stone, brick or concrete and the roof of slate, iron or tiles. There were nine out-offices and farm steadings. The occupants were recorded as follows:
Marcella O’Leary, head of the family, can read and write, aged 74 years, a grocer, widow.
Bridget Coyne, her daughter, can read and write, aged 39 years, a widow.
William Coyne, her son, can read and write, aged 10 years, a scholar.
Christopher Coyne, her son, can read and write, aged 8 years, a scholar.
Marcella Coyne, her daughter, can read, aged 5 years, a scholar.
Matthew Archbold, a boarder, can read and write, aged 50 years, unmarried.
Maria Domican, servant, can read and write, aged 28 years, a general domestic servant, unmarried.
All were recorded as Roman Catholics and were recorded as being born in Co. Kildare.
The census records of 1901 and 1911 were used to research the following birth, marriage and death records of Bert’s family.
Christopher Joseph Coyne was born 1 April 1892 in Robertstown, Naas, Co. Kildare. His parents Christopher Coyne of Robertstown, a shopkeeper and Bridget Fitzpatrick of Killybegs, Prosperous were married 22 January 1890. During their marriage they had five children born to them. William the eldest was born 11 January 1891. Andrew was born 11 January 1894 and died 27 July 1894 at the age of six months of whooping cough. Marcella was born 11 January 1896. Mary Josephine was born 3 June 1897 she too sadly died 17 December 1898.
Some stories relating to ‘Bert’ will be posted periodically.
